Ongoing Exhibitions

This summer, Museo Reina Sofia presents seven different exhibitions:

Main Venue

Pity and Terror. Picasso’s Path to Guernica
Are there continuities between Guernica and the strange, often agonized vision of humanity that Picasso had set forth over the preceding decade? How did Picasso’s distinctive set of concerns, which at moments seem dark to the point of despair, inform his final picture of women and animals in pain? These are some of the questions set by this exhibition on Guernica, the master work at Museo Reina Sofía Collection.

Kobro and Strzemiński. Avant-Garde Prototypes
Active from the late 1910s until the early 1950s, Katarzyna Kobro and Władysław Strzemiński produced work that was especially consistent with modernist avant-garde ideas. Touching on various disciplines, including painting, sculpture, architecture, and industrial and graphic design, their oeuvre anticipated new trends that were to reach their plenitude in the practices of later generations, such as minimalism, the Zero movement, and reductionist art.

Lee Lozano. Pulling out the Stops
Throughout the 1960s, and across only twelve years, Lee Lozano (Newark, 1930–1999) developed a radically provocative body of work, actuated by the staunch questioning of each and every socially imposed structure. Her career unfolded alongside the emerging civil rights and anti-war movement and the protest, free and pacifist spirit that sprang up through the political landscape and aesthetics in America during that period. This retrospective surveys Lozano’s ability to understand and incorporate casuistry in a period which redefined the changing conditions of art and its progressive disintegration in life.

Mário Pedrosa. On the Affective Nature of Form
The current exhibition is intended as a tribute to Mário Pedrosa through a selection of Brazilian and international art that responds to some of the artistic questions he addressed at different points in his intellectual production. The show embraces an open, plural and non-linear model of art history, regarding it not as a sequence of superimposed styles and languages but as a series of proposals for establishing an effective communication between artist and viewer.

NSK from Kapital to Capital. Neue Slowenische Kunst. An Event of the Final Decade of Yugoslavia
The present exhibition is the first retrospective in Spain on the artist group NSK (Neue Slowenische Kunst) [New Slovenian Art], which spearheaded one of the most important experiences in the culture that materialised in 1980s Yugoslavia, during the Cold War. NSK was a collective which bound together collectives and groups - Laibach, Irwin and the Scipion Nasice Sisters Theatre/SNTS – with approaches to a range of disciplines.

Parque del Retiro Venues

Rosa Barba. Solar Flux Recordings
Rosa Barba (Agrigento, Italy, 1972) uses the medium of the cinema, from its devices and materiality to the temporalities it summons up, to explore the mechanisms that articulate our era, when any possibility of rupture can stem only from the recognition of a society where the difference between productive work and creativity is non-existent, and where our dependence on technology and gadgets is almost absolute. For her intervention in the Palacio de Cristal, Rosa Barba has created an installation entitled Solar Flux Recordings (2017).

Franz Erhard Walther. A Place for the Body
This is the first major anthological exhibition to be held in Spain on Franz Erhard Walther, presents a large number of sculptures, drawings, paintings, photographic documentation and archive material from the whole of his career. Walther sees his sculptures as places for the body, inhabitable spaces that modify their appearance and significance in accordance with multiple formal solutions, and also with the actions (which the artist terms “activations”) suggested to the public by the artist and the works themselves.

Interview with Joan La Barbara. Voice Is The Original Instrument

Throughout her career as a performer and composer, Joan La Barbara, a hugely influential figure in the sphere of contemporary experimental music, has explored the human voice as a multi-faceted instrument, developing a true and signature vocabulary of experimental techniques. She uses these techniques to explore the potential range of timbres in a single pitch, circular breathing inspired by French horn playing, and multiphonics, in addition to recovering classics such as choral singing.

RRS. Radio del Museo Reina Sofía. Agnès Pe. Lathe Biosas Trilogy

This trilogy of podcasts by Agnès Pe, commissioned by RRS, is centred on these three activities: sleeping, eating, working. Each episode comprises a remix of sounds taken from internet archives in which these three activities can be heard, and in this instance Agnès’s work finds a paradox with the Epicurean principle: hedonistic attitudes which form the basis of the discreet life outlined by the philosopher have become part of public life, a hyper-representation of the every-day.
