Force line: The Politics and Aesthetics of Memory and Rethinking the Museum

Organised by: Museo Reina Sofía

Reinterpretation of Alegoría del Invierno (Allegory of Winter) by Remedios Varo, Desmusea, 2020

Drawing inspiration from Remedios Varo’s work Allegory of Winter from the Museo Reina Sofía Collection, equipo1517 invites people to participate in the collective creation of a teenage time capsule: a cache to place elements that reflect the teen spirit of this period, elements to preserve the memory and emotions of the present, casting a desire, a recollection, a protest or a question towards an uncertain future. The elements can take the form of text, image (photographs, memes, etc.), video or audio — any kind of archive which can be saved on to a pen drive, to be buried in the Museo’s blended garden (Sabatini Garden) with the aim of being retrieved in 2050.

During the #Capsule2050 Festival, a selection of the proposals received will be broadcast and some of the young participants will be connected live. Furthermore, online performances and workshops will take place over the course of the afternoon, before culminating in the live broadcast of the capsule burial ceremony by equipo1517, the collective Desmusea and the team from the Museo’s Education Department.

As a result, this project is a call for teenage youngsters across the world to participate collectively or individually: collectives must choose one sole element that represents them as a group and which expresses an agreed message to launch into the future. They will also be able to explain their motivation over the course of the festival, be it through an explanatory video or via live connection. Groups of teenagers linked to programmes from cultural institutions (museums, cultural centres, art schools, theatres, etc.) will be given preference. In terms of individual proposals, a selection of contributions will be shown during the live stream on the day of the festival.
